Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS is a common reproductive problem that affects about one in ten women of reproductive age. It can strike at any age and girls as young as 11 years old have been diagnosed with it. PCOS affects a woman’s menstrual cycle and it has been pointed as the common cause of female infertility.
Getting pregnant if you have this syndrome is difficult, but it certainly isn’t impossible. The main challenges one will encounter is the lack of ovulation and the irregular menstrual cycle. Since missed periods are common among women with PCOS, it can be difficult to pinpoint the most fertile days for sexual intercourse. Even if a woman tries to chart her cycle, it will still be a hit or miss scenario.
For most women with PCOS, working with a fertility specialist is still the best way for a successful pregnancy. A qualified specialist will be able to prescribe the best treatment plan for a woman’s particular condition after careful testing and diagnosis. Of course, the woman must follow the treatment plan religiously and make routine visits to the specialist so that her progress can be monitored.
Aside from this, here are some helpful tips that women can do to increase their chances of pregnancy – despite being diagnosed with PCOS:
- Change your diet and exercise regimen. Sometimes, a lifestyle overhaul is just what a woman needs to up her chances of conceiving a child. In fact, losing about 5% of body weight can already make a difference in a woman’s fertility. So keep active by engaging yourself in physical activities that you enjoy. Also, stock up on nutritious foods and lower your intake of carbs and fats – this will help keep your weight at bay.
- Learn to Relax. Dealing with PCOS and all its symptoms can be very stressful, but you shouldn’t succumb to the stress. After all, stress messes with your hormones and lowers your immune system. So take a breather and don’t put pressure on yourself. Learn relaxing techniques or meditation – it will help a lot.
- Timing Is Key. While irregular menstrual cycle can make it difficult for you to tell when you’re fertile, you can rely on other body signals to know the best time for conception. For instance, you can chart your basal body temperature and plot it in a graph. Since basal body temperature rises slightly just after ovulation, you can time your time sexual intercourse when you notice a spike in your graph.
- Take the right medication. There are several medications a woman can take to manage PCOS – birth control pills, diabetes medication, or fertility medication. Before buying anything, be sure to consult with your doctor to know the right brands to buy. You should also know if there are side effects and how to manage them. Once you start taking medication, follow through it and don’t stress out if you don’t see results right away. It can take a few months before the effects kick in so learn to be patient.
